Truck door lettering, done to the rule: legal name and USDOT number on a single panel, both doors, cut to be legible from 50 feet in daylight while stationary. That is the standard in 49 CFR 390.21, and it is a legibility requirement rather than a letter height.
This is the marking an interstate carrier actually needs. The rule asks for the carrier's legal name or a single trade name and the USDOT number — a number on its own does not satisfy it.

Your name has to match the FMCSA record
Not a DBA that is missing from your FMCSA record, not the name on your invoices, not a shortened version that fits better. The name on the door has to be your legal name or the single trade name listed on your FMCSA record.
Name mismatch is a common marking problem, and it is entirely avoidable. If you are unsure what your record says, check it before you order. It costs nothing and it is faster than a remake.
Choosing lines and size
Two lines fits a name and the USDOT number. Three adds city and state. Four adds one more line — a DBA, an MC number where a shipper requires it, or a fleet unit number.
Longer names need a wider panel, not smaller letters. If what you send will not fit at 2 inches we will tell you rather than shrink it, because letter height is the part the standard actually cares about.

See it on the door
Type your details in the order form above and watch the door. The lettering is positioned where the rule wants it — both sides of the power unit, sized to read from 50 feet.
Illustrative preview. Position and proportions follow the door-placement convention; the delivered decal is cut vinyl, not a printed picture, and your truck is presumably not this one.
