USDOT and MC number decals

Federal rule 49 CFR 390.21 requires a commercial motor vehicle in interstate commerce to display the carrier's legal name or single trade name and its USDOT number on both sides of the power unit. The lettering has to contrast sharply with the background and stay readable in daylight from 50 feet while the truck is stopped.

The rule sets no universal minimum letter height. It sets a legibility standard, and 2 inches is what we cut by default to meet it. If a competitor tells you two inches is federal law, they have not read the section.

Your legal name has to match your FMCSA record exactly. Not your DBA, not the name on the invoice — the record. Name mismatch is the most common marking violation there is, and it is entirely avoidable.
