What "Not For Hire" actually means

It marks a private carrier — you haul your own goods, in your own vehicle, as part of your own business. You are not paid to move someone else's freight.

A landscaping company hauling its own equipment is a private carrier. A bakery running its own delivery trucks is a private carrier. A freight company moving a customer's pallets for money is not.

Who needs one

Not everybody, and this is worth being straight about: there is no federal rule requiring every private carrier to display it. Anyone selling it as universally mandatory is guessing.

Where it earns its place:

  • Some state and local rules ask for it directly
  • It heads off the assumption that you are operating for hire without the authority to do so, which is a conversation you would rather not have at a scale house or a roadside stop
  • Some insurers and permit conditions reference it

If none of that applies to your operation, you do not need this decal, and we would rather tell you that than sell you vinyl.

Sold as a pair. Both doors, one price, cut to the same legibility standard as every other marking here.
