The TxDMV number is issued by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles when you register to run intrastate. Registering and marking are two different things, though, and fewer trucks have to carry this on the door than the internet suggests. Read the next part before you buy.

Sizing

The 24" x 3.5" is the standard door marking. The 12" x 2" suits smaller equipment or a panel that will not take the wider strip flat.

Letters are cut to remain legible at 50 feet, the same standard applied to every marking here.

You may not need this

Texas gives you two ways to mark a truck, and only one of them involves your TxDMV number. Mark the doors the way the federal rule asks — your legal name and your USDOT number — and you have satisfied Texas without this decal. The state number is only compulsory if you take the Texas route instead.

It also only reaches some vehicles: trucks with three or more axles, truck-tractors, road-tractors, and tow trucks. A two-axle straight truck can be registered with TxDMV and still fall outside the marking rule entirely. Several other categories are exempt outright.

Every paid-registration site will tell you the number must be displayed on your vehicles, flat, with no conditions. That is wrong in at least three directions, and it sells decals.

If you are not sure which side of that you are on, ask us before you order. We would rather talk you out of a decal than cut you one you do not need.
